KRLON, in partnership with RELON Uganda, organized a landmark environmental event on October 21-22, 2024, in the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement, Kyegegwa District. This impactful event brought together refugees, community-based organizations (CBOs), refugee-led organizations (RLOs), and local stakeholders under the banner of the “Refugee Community Action for Environmental Conservation” campaign. The goal was clear: empower the refugee community to combat deforestation, address waste management issues, and promote sustainable energy practices, creating a healthier ecosystem for all.

500 Trees Planted to Revitalize Kyaka II Ecosystem

On October 22, participants gathered to plant 500 trees in Sweswe, an area heavily impacted by deforestation. This tree-planting effort aimed to restore biodiversity, prevent soil erosion, and enhance the area’s natural beauty. With the guidance of experts and hands-on participation from local leaders and community members, each tree planted was a step toward a greener, more sustainable future for Kyaka II.

Inspiring Dialogue on Environmental Sustainability

October 21 featured an in-depth community dialogue, focusing on sustainable practices. Discussions highlighted the pressing environmental issues in the settlement, such as deforestation, poor waste management, and unsustainable energy consumption. These exchanges aimed to inspire actionable solutions and promote community-driven conservation efforts. By facilitating dialogue, KRLON and RELON aimed to foster a sense of collective responsibility among community members, helping them understand their vital role in environmental protection.

Sports for Conservation: Engaging Youth Through Football

To further spread awareness and foster community spirit, KRLON organized environmental-themed football matches. These spirited games saw the Bukere Women face Kaborogota Women and Under-18 boys from Itambabiniga compete against Sweswe. The football matches, filled with enthusiasm and camaraderie, provided a fun and engaging platform to reinforce the importance of environmental conservation among youth and the broader community.

Looking Ahead: Commitment to a Greener Future

This initiative reflects KRLON’s dedication to creating long-term positive change. Partnering with organizations such as UNHCR, OPM, NSAMIZI RELON and many more organizations, KRLON is committed to continuous environmental conservation efforts in Kyaka II, aiming for a future where sustainable practices become integral to everyday life.
