World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on October 16th to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security, including the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development.
Kyegegwa District celebrated this day in Kyaka II Refugee Settlement on 27th Oct 2022 in Mukondo zone, Mukondo C playground with the community – PoCs and Host Community District under the theme “Safe food today for a healthy tomorrow.” . A lot as exhibited reflected different agricultural and livestock technologies. The Government of Uganda, UNHCR Kyaka II –Uganda, Civil societies, and other humanitarian agencies assured their commitment to keeping offering extension services to the PoCs to increase food production, security, and income.
Hon. BYAMUKAMA KISOKE JOHN, the Chairman LCV, Kyegegwa District who was the Chief guest of honor of the event appreciated WFP and the partners’ efforts invested to make that day realized and he also requested partners to consider the host community in every activity they do in the settlement. “We cannot have enough food when we are not all in food production. All of us must be involved in the production -not only the refugees but also the host community population”, he said.
Mr. Hillary Agwe, the Livelihood, and Economic Inclusion Associate at UNHCR -Kyaka Field Unit, Uganda represented the UNHCR at the event. He thanked the exhibitors who showcased their livelihood innovations to combat food insufficiency on the market and added that “World Food Day 2022 raises awareness of the need for more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agri-food systems. It calls for action across sectors to ensure that our agri-food systems deliver enough affordable, nutritious, and safe food for all. To achieve this transformation, the community needs to change, behaviors, and business models.”

Among other people who gave remarks during the event included officials from WFP, OPM -Kyaka II, ADRA -Kyaka II, and many others.
The key messages centered on Supporting Climate-Smart Agriculture practices that increase yield per unit area with integration for water for production projects, Supporting long-term livelihood activities that stimulate agriculture production through Intensive farming for income, Supporting large-scale farming of profitable value chains, and facilitating the formation of producer cooperatives in collaboration with the private sector and financial institutions for improved access to markets, and Environmental Conservation.
