In 2023, the Kyaka II Refugee Settlement saw a momentous occasion with the celebration of the Digital Inclusion Program by the Kyaka Refugee-Led Organizations Network (KRLON). This initiative, in collaboration with other refugee-led organizations and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) like Finn Church Aid-FCA, addressed the critical issue of digital exclusion among refugees in the settlement.
Through concerted efforts, 115 graduates from various refugee-led organizations underwent training in essential digital skills. These skills included email management, communication proficiency, social media utilization, report writing, grant application, and participation in virtual meetings. The success of the program can be attributed to the collaborative efforts of KRLON and its partners, who provided crucial support throughout the initiative.
The impact of the Digital Inclusion Program cannot be overstated. It has transformed the landscape for refugee-led organizations within the settlement. Prior to the program, a staggering 92% of these organizations lacked recognition, visibility, and support, which severely impeded their ability to access essential resources and showcase their impact.
However, with the acquisition of digital skills, these organizations are now better positioned to navigate the digital landscape. They can attract potential donors, demonstrate their effectiveness, and improve their operations. This newfound visibility and proficiency not only enhance their individual capacities but also foster a more supportive ecosystem for refugees in the settlement.
The significance of this project extends beyond the immediate benefits for refugee-led organizations. By bridging the digital divide and empowering these organizations with essential digital competencies, the program contributes to the overall well-being and empowerment of refugees in the settlement. It creates opportunities for economic advancement, social integration, and community development.
In essence, the Digital Inclusion Program spearheaded by KRLON marks a significant step towards creating a more inclusive and empowered refugee community. By equipping individuals and organizations with the tools to thrive in the digital age, it paves the way for a brighter future where all refugees have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
